DSTRKT FOUNDATION

was officially formed in December 2018. However, the co-directors, Frank Robinson and Horace Wormely, have been doing the work of the foundation since 2012. Frank and Horace reconnected during the 2009-10 D-League season, while playing for the Los Angeles D-Fenders. Together, while playing, they would embark on a journey of empowerment, forming their consulting company, The Layercake Group.

What began with utilizing their own careers–negotiating their own player contracts, identifying and facilitating strategic brand partnerships for their peers, and mentoring younger players as they navigated the industry–Frank and Horace identified that athletes, of various backgrounds, were missing essential skills, knowledge, and insight about the industry that stifled their agency and autonomy, and ultimately, hindered their ability to fully realize their potential as people and athletes.

The first iteration of what would become the DSTRKT Foundation was a weekend-long event, dubbed Sports Summit 818. Comprising a free-agent basketball combine, youth football clinic, health and wellness expo, and a panel of sports industry experts, the Sports Summit 818 focused on providing the sports and fitness community with opportunities for career advice and advancement, and health and wellness awareness and education.

Sports Summit 818, in conjunction with their experiences navigating the basketball world and consulting for brands and individuals in various industries, gave Frank and Horace great insight on how to best approach creating pathways for their contemporaries and the generations to follow. And it begins with the DSTRKT Foundation
